Retreat

Retreat

I left home at the innocent age of seventeen
Most naïve suburban boy the Army had ever seen
Six years later still learning how to be a man
People I knew all seemed to have a different plan

Trying to hold on to the dwindling light of days
Wind blowing to my back and I’m counting the ways
Seemed like I took a wrong turn, but it got me here
Another morning comes and my vision is clear

Shadows grow much longer as the daylight fades
I need another promise before I pull the shades
Nobody here holding fire to my feet
Nobody looking around that I want to meet
I’m about to retreat

Somewhere around the middle I found a clue
Learning all about what I thought I already knew
Let me set the record straight, I don’t know what I did
To find solid ground when I know I could’ve easily slid

Some people show their memories on the outside
Furthest thing from integrity and grace
Some people fall and some live a life of innocence
Some got the hard lines of wisdom on their face

It’s hard for a restless soul to settle down
Carried that weight while moving from town to town
Life is so easy when it gives you that open door
Until you really find out what human nature is for
